Ashfaq was a competitor at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games where he won the gold medal in his weight class. He also won the bantamweight class at the 2012 GB Amateur Boxing Championships.

Inspired by GB Olympian Amir Khan, who achieved a silver medal, Qais aspires to go one better and fight for gold, 'Any tournament I go to I go to win that gold medal.' This counter punch boxer has no intention of slowing down after Rio either, 'As soon as the Olympics are done in Rio I'll be turning Pro and going up the ranks hopefully'.

Speaking about the Khan Legacy Qais recognises the 'huge influence' Amir has had 'especially for the Asian community' Qais addresses the barriers the young Asians boys may have experienced before Khan's time, where families may have favoured sports such as cricket, 'he's shown that even in a sport like boxing we can succeed and its given a lot of confidence to the Asian boxers'.
