Meet key individuals from Sporting Equals

photo Arun Kang BA (Hons), MA
Chief Executive


Arun Kang has developed the organisation to ensure that Sporting Equals is now recognised as one of the leading experts on equality and diversity in sport.

Before this Arun secured his status as an authority on equality and diversity as CEO of a countywide equality partnership and before then as Head of Equality for a countywide local authority. Arun's other credentials include an MA in Promoting Equality and Managing Diversity and a first degree in Third Sector Management as well as several years working in local radio as a presenter and producer for the BBC and as a youth worker.

In his time with Sporting Equals he has guided the expansion of the organisation's work into faith and physical activity and secured a three year project with Age UK delivering the Fit As A Fiddle Faith and Community Strand across England.

Arun has ensured that Sporting Equals continues to work closely with Sport England, increasing participation in sport by working with national governing bodies of sport and sports clubs to improve their reach to under represented communities.

Since 2010 Arun is the lead member for sport for the World Entrepreneurship Forum. He currently leads the Department of Health Responsibility Deal Task Force for Inclusion.

He extends his empathy for health and wellbeing as the founder of a travel company promoting healthier living.

Arun also acts as a mentor for sports and travel students at Bournville College, and since 2012 Arun has been a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a network of people from a wide range of backgrounds united by a desire to build a better society.

In his spare time Arun enjoys sport and regularly participates in tennis, football and running.

Head of Marketing and Communications


David is a senior marketing professional with over 16 years commercial experience covering both public and the private sector. He has considerable brand management experience ranging from leisure and health to fast moving consumer goods, financial services and charities.

A graduate in design management, David started his career in the advertising industry, rising to Senior Account Director level in roles in London, Birmingham and Manchester. More recently David has held overall responsibility for strategic commercial business development through roles as Client Services Director and Head of Marketing.

David has a passion for all sport. He enjoyed a longstanding amateur rugby career which has now evolved into a coaching role. A qualified rugby coach and referee, he fulfills the dual roles of coaching club coordinator and U17 head coach at his local rugby club.

Head of Administration


Rae joined Sporting Equals in November 2009, having worked in a variety of administration roles for the past 13 years. Ten of those years were in the public and voluntary sectors, including St John Ambulance, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, Southend Excellence Cluster (part of the DfES Excellence in Cities Programme) and Warwick Business School.

Rae brings previous experience of race equality to the role, having worked for three years at Warwickshire Race Equality Partnership as Support Manager and Company Secretary before joining the Sporting Equals team. Rae completed the Certificate in Social Sciences with the Open University in 2006 and the Diploma in Social Policy in 2008 and in July 2011 completed her Honours degree in Social Sciences with Social Policy, being awarded a First Class Honours.

Head of Consultancy


Nik Trivedi joined the Sporting Equals team in July 2007. Previously, Nik was Acting Chief Executive of Voice East Midlands, a regional organisation that worked to ensure that black and minority ethnic (BME) third sector organisations were engaged in the economic, social and cultural development of the East Midlands.

Whilst a Regional BME Sports Manager in the East Midlands, Nik authored the report ?Meeting the Need? that helped to inform and influence the Regional Sports Plan. He has also worked strategically and as a practitioner in the fields of community safety, regeneration and mediation.

Nik enjoys most sports and is a Qualified Community Sports Leader, an accredited Equality Standard Advisor (in Sport) and has a BA (Honours) Degree in Public Administration.

Insight and Projects Manager


Shaheen graduated from Sunderland University in 2000 with a Business Studies Degree, and began her career in the housing sector. She has considerable experience of carrying out feasibility studies on projects and putting together detailed bid submissions to secure funding. She later took up a role with Mercian Housing to manage their affordable housing programme.

In 2007/08 Shaheen took up a senior partnership with the Birmingham Social Housing Partnership (BSHP) which involved project management and supporting the Executive Board to develop strategic housing delivery within the City of Birmingham. Whilst with BSHP, Shaheen was seconded to the National Housing Federation to progress housing policy in the Midlands region.

Shaheen was appointed as Research Manager with Sporting Equals in June 2008 and has been a key figure in moving the organisation forward and developing its research expertise on behalf of black and minority ethnic communities.
