Sporting Equals: Focus on Osmani Trust
Osmani Trust is a youth and community organisation based in Tower Hamlets and Newham. The Trust offers a wide range of community, health and sporting initiatives tailored to the needs of the community. It aims to provide a holistic service, which helps people, particularly those living in disadvantaged urban communities to re-engage with mainstream society and improve their quality of life. Through its provisions, Osmani Trust seeks to address issues impacting the community including substance misuse, racial tensions, criminality and anti-social behaviour, territoriality and gang-related violence, unemployment and overcrowding, lack of training and employment opportunities. It also places strong emphasis on the health and social welfare of the community. Osmani Trust works with ordinary people helping them to do extraordinary things.

What programmes have you created and what impact has it had on the improvement of BME communities? Osmani Trust has a range of services aimed primarily at the BME group living in London, we have eight projects currently ranging from mentoring, health living, girls only and sport specific projects. The services we provided are culturally sensitive to the BME communities, each we have over 800 young people and adults taking part in regular activities. Osmani Trust is always seeking to improve the services and provide services that meet the needs of the local community.

What are you planning to work on in the near future? Osmani Trust has started the journey of developing the new ‘Osmani Centre’, which will be completed in Spring 2011. This new state of the arty youth and community building will provide the local community with a new hub for community services, the centre will include a new youth gym, active studio, community café, multi-purpose hall and kitchen, youth club, It room, training/meeting room and officers.

Who have you been partners with in developing your projects? All of the projects as Osmani Trust work with various partners, these include local authority, private and voluntary sector organizations as well as funders and national governing bodies.

What project or initiative are you most proud of? The new Osmani Centre is currently our pride and joy, this centre when complete will take the services to the next level enabling projects to enhance the services will provide.
