Activity Alliance - Supporting Disabled People Be Active For Life

An exciting opportunity exists to become Chair of Activity Alliance, one of the UK's most respected, influential and ambitious charities.

Under the current Chair, Charles Reed, Activity Alliance has been at the forefront of supporting disabled people be active for life by enabling organisations to support disabled individuals to be and stay active.

Since its founding in 1998 as the English Federation of Disability Sport, Activity Alliance has become the go-to organisation for information about disabled people's engagement with sport and active recreation.

Having increased their annual operating budget from £1m to £3m in the past five years, established a vibrant new corporate identity, and exceeded Code for Sports Governance requirements, the charity has major ambitions for significant growth.

Activity Alliance seeks a new Chair to build on past successes and lead the organisation into a new era of innovation and growth.

Activity Alliance's Achievements:

For the last 20 years English Federation of Disability Sport, now Activity Alliance, has been an integral part of the sport and activity landscape and promoted the interests of disabled people in sport and recreation. Please see below for a summary of their recent achievements:

They have become the “go to” organisation for information about disabled people's engagement with sport and active recreation;

They are recognised beyond the sport and activity sectors as a leading centre of excellence in inclusive marketing and communications – supporting organisations to engage disabled people more effectively;

They have increased their annual operating budget from £1m to £3m over the last five years with major ambitions for significant growth

They have led the way in achieving the highest governance standards, exceeding Code for Sports Governance requirements and modernising their rules in the process.

They have established a vibrant new corporate identity – sharing a fresh new brand and name which will resonate more powerfully with a much wider group of stakeholders;

Developing and rolling-out programmes to improve access to sport and physical activity for disabled people, such as Sainsbury's Active Kids for All PE and Inclusive Activity Programme Training and Get Out Get Active.

About Activity Alliance (formerly EFDS)

“Disabled people are active for life”

This vision is the organisations' view of the future position that they wish to see achieved. Their definition of that position is: “Equality in participation whereby disabled people are just as likely to be active as non-disabled people”. Their clear target for progress by March 2021 is to see disabled people's participation rates on a sustainable upward trajectory.

It is important to recognise that following several years of “flat line” participation it requires a sustained effort, and the effective and expert contribution of Activity Alliance and their partners to see the charity positively turn the participation curve upwards. Disabled people remain the least active group in the society and organisations continue to need the help of Activity Alliance and their Member and Partner organisations to enable them to respond effectively to this challenge.

Making active lives possible by enabling organisations to support individual disabled people to be active and stay active for life.

At Activity Alliance they:

A New Brand and Name

On 26 April 2018, to mark the first of many milestones in their 20th anniversary year, the charity's branding and name was changed to Activity Alliance.

The change follows a thorough strategic review that included research about the charity's purpose and its impact. As part of the review, the organisation carried out stakeholder consultations with staff, member organisations, disabled people and partners.

The feedback consensus was that the original name, 'English Federation of Disability Sport' limited the organisation's potential.

The review concluded that a new direction and wider remit were needed around well-being, activity and health, creating the opportunity for the charity to deliver greater impact for disabled people.

Though the name may have changed, the vision remains the same: disabled people are active for life.

The Role

Activity Alliance now wish to appoint a Chair to lead them through an exciting period of development and growth.


The Chair will be:

A connector, providing the link between the Board and the Executive, giving leadership and support to the Executive and the Leadership Team in the delivery of the strategic plan.

A team leader, providing leadership and direction to the Board enabling them to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of Activity Alliance.

An ambassador, working with the Executive, to raise the external profile of Activity Alliance with relevant partners and bodies and increase their role and influence.

Principle Responsibilities:

Governance and Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the Board in their responsibility for setting direction, long-term vision and performance of Activity Alliance within the powers and parameters laid down in its Articles of Association and Objects.
  • Chair the Board Meetings in a professional and impartial manner ensuring sufficient time for discussion and that conclusions are reached and decisions taken to further the interests of Activity Alliance.
  • Facilitate active engagement of the Board with appropriate challenge, drawing on the skills and knowledge of members so that the Board achieves its full potential.

External Member and Stakeholder Relations

  • Represent Activity Alliance at events, meetings and functions ensuring appropriate style, content and presentation of such representation and that this exemplifies Activity Alliance values.
  • Actively seek to maintain, create and build effective relationships with members, key partners and stakeholders establishing mutual understanding of interests and needs.
  • Ensure that all appropriate steps are taken so that Activity Alliance are perceived by members, key partners and stakeholders, the media and the wider sport and active recreation community as a well-managed, influential and successful organisation.

Relationship with Chief Executive and wider Leadership team

  • Promote and exemplify constructive relationships between the Board, executive team, employees and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure that there is a clear and open process for the recruitment (and if necessary dismissal) of the Chief Executive, and a rigorous procedure for setting and reviewing his/her remuneration based on annual objectives and performance review.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Executive to ensure that the organisation is run in accordance with the decisions of the Board and the organisation's Articles of Association and that there is clarity about the organisation's objectives at all levels.


  • Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to the strategic objectives and core functions of Activity Alliance.
  • Exemplify Activity Alliance's values.
  • Ability to foster and promote a collaborative team environment and to forge consensus among the Board.
  • Politically aware and able to engage at a senior level with politicians and senior officials.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building abilities and comfortable in an ambassadorial role.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and bring people together.
  • Exceptional communication skills in order to represent the organisation externally including through delivering presentations and managing stakeholders.
  • Energy, drive and above all a willingness to work towards achieving their shared objectives



  • Operating at a senior strategic leadership level with a successful track record of achievement.
  • Being a Chair or a Non-Executive Director
  • Substantial business experience and understanding of how to run a small organisation effectively and with strong financial literacy.
  • Lived experience of disability would be an advantage.

Knowledge and Skills

  • A broad understanding of the sporting landscape in the UK, including the political environment would be an advantage.
  • A knowledge and understanding of the governance framework and issues applicable to not for profit organisations.
  • An interest in sport and active recreation and issues that matter to their members.


Appointment Terms:

The initial term of office is three years. Trustees can stand for re-election to the Board for additional two terms. This makes the maximum term of office nine years.

They would expect attendance at all five Board meetings and one strategy day per year. They would anticipate the same level of attendance at any sub-committees you are part of.

The Chair will also meet regularly with the Chief Executive, setting their objectives, monitoring performance and providing ongoing counsel and support. These meetings would normally be around 6 to 8 weeks apart.

Activity Alliance hopes that all Trustees are able to also attend and engage in a number of their events. They ask that you commit to attendance at a minimum of one Activity event per year; this could be one of their workshops, a competition event or a fundraising event. Events take place around the country.

The Chair is an ambassador for the Charity and from time to needs to undertake media and other speaking engagements.

Time commitment will be the equivalent to two days per month.
