Black Unity Bike Ride

Since 2020 Black Unity Bike Ride (BUBR) has inspired over 10,000 registered participants from Black communities to lead active and healthier lives via cycling wellbeing activations. BUBR registered as an independent charity on 29th April 2024 and is run by a small team of volunteers and freelancers.

BUBR is a unique, organic and authentic movement that is trusted, valued and admired by a growing community of stakeholders. We have built a reputation of high-quality execution, empowerment and inclusivity and we live by our values of Unity, Empowerment and Love.

Overview of Funding and How It Helped Achieve Objectives

The funding from Sporting Equals played a vital role in stabilising and sustaining Black Unity Bike Ride (BUBR) during a particularly challenging period of organisational transition. The investment supported core staffing, operational coordination, volunteer management, safeguarding, governance, compliance, and impact measurement infrastructure.

The funding enabled BUBR to continue delivering high-quality programmes and expand its reach. The support directly contributed to:

  • Delivery of 4 major activations
  • Expansion into Manchester, marking BUBR’s first growth outside London
  • Improved systems, governance, and operational stability
  • Increased female participation from 41% to 47%
  • Strong participant and volunteer satisfaction outcomes
  • Development of more sustainable income generation through ticketing and merchandise
