Simon Kirkland

Trustee

Simon has a broad sporting background and over 40 years’ experience in sport development. Initially, he  worked for Birmingham City Council as a PE teacher, facility manager, Sport Development Officer and an Area Sport and Leisure Officer. Then after a short period as National Development Manager.

He  became Chief Executive of England Basketball for four and a half years and most recently he has run his  own sport development/education consultancy, Sport Structures since 2002.

In the last 16 years, he has committed to volunteer on several boards of sports organisations including Baseball Softball UK, Chair of West Midlands Swimming, Chair and Vice Chair of the Black Country Sports Partnership and a Director of Birmingham County  FA and most recently, he chaired The British Taekwondo Council and currently he is on the Stakeholder board for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Through these experiences Simon has always addressed the inequalities in sports participation particularly in empowering local communities to develop themselves. This was particularly successful in his work in Inner-city communities where he led programmes that saw increases in Asian female participation and supporting growth of Black-Caribbean communities. At Basketball he developed a mentoring programme for non-white members to support them into positions of responsibilities.

The last twenty years his company has supported cultural change in many sports bodies both using and changing the Equality standard for Sport.

Simon brings significant governance experience that along with planning for growth will add to the Board team.
