Strengthening Community Cohesion After the 2024 Summer Riots

The 2024 Summer Riots exposed a deep-seated tension simmering amongst sections of British society. The violence and unrest that permeated across the country brought the vulnerability of minority faith communities and racially minoritised people into sharp political focus. Research carried out by Sporting Equals in the aftermath of these events, which focused on conversations with Sikh, Muslim and multi-faith sporting organisations revealed both acute security concerns and long-standing issues around representation, racism and mental-health support.

Sport can play a pivotal role in fostering community cohesion by working with grassroots organisations. While opportunities clearly exist to use sport as a mechanism for supporting integration, this potential remains underutilised. Realising it will require more sustained support and collaborative approaches at the local level, particularly in anticipation of future flashpoints. Many faith based community and grassroots organisations delivering sport can help play a key role in the prevention and recovery strategy to rebuild trust and resilience within communities.
