As Black History Month unfolds, we shine a spotlight on Black Girls Do Run UK (BGDRUK)—a trailblazing charity and Sporting Equals Associate Member—whose mission is transforming the running landscape for Black women across the UK.
Founded to create safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces, BGDRUK is more than a running group. It’s a movement that champions visibility, participation, and representation. Their work ensures every Black woman feels she belongs—on the start line and beyond.
Running Towards Equity and Joy
Thanks to support from Sporting Equals, BGDRUK has made remarkable strides in 2025:
- Run Leader Development: Training women to become certified leaders, expanding the network and building local ownership.
- Community Connection: Hosting their first-ever Away Weekend—a three-day retreat filled with movement, yoga, and wellbeing workshops.
- Representation and Culture: Planning a bespoke Black History Month event that blends movement, literature, and reflection. This includes a community-selected book club, a social run, yoga, and space for meaningful conversation.
- Access and Equity: Launching the Run Kit Library, which provides free access to essential gear, removing financial barriers and boosting confidence.
- Support Fund: Offering financial assistance to members facing challenges in accessing events or equipment.
Why It Matters
BGDRUK’s Black History Month event is a powerful reminder that representation and celebration are not confined to a single month—they are ongoing commitments. By blending culture with movement, BGDRUK creates spaces where Black women can connect, reflect, and rediscover joy.

Looking Ahead
With a vision to build a national network of confident, connected, and visible Black women runners, BGDRUK is investing in leadership, sustainability, and culturally resonant programming. Their journey is one of empowerment, and every step forward is a stride toward equity.
This Black History Month, we celebrate BGDRUK’s impact and the women who make it possible. Because when Black girls run, they lead, inspire, and transform.
