Celebrating Ramadan with Salaam Peace: A Sporting Equals Associate Member

The Inspiration Behind Salaam Peace

Salaam Peace is more than just a community engagement programme; it is a movement dedicated to creating positive change. Rooted in East and North London, Salaam Peace started with a logo, The Eid Cup, and a £9,000 grant from the Metropolitan Police Authority. Today, it has grown into a multi-award-winning organisation that unites individuals from diverse backgrounds, embodying the mantra: “Be the Change in the Community we want to see.”

Key Projects of Salaam Peace

The organisation runs a variety of impactful programmes focusing on sports, education, and consultancy. These initiatives aim to engage individuals of all ages and backgrounds through:

  • Sports: School-based activities, community outreach, teams, female fitness programmes, cycling, and walking groups.
  • Education: Study Plus sessions, workshops, and mentoring schemes.
  • Consultancy: Providing expert guidance in Eastern Europe and Germany.

Each of these projects serves as a vehicle for empowerment, personal growth, and community cohesion.

The Cultural Significance of Ramadan for Salaam Peace

Ramadan is a deeply significant month for Salaam Peace and its community members. It is a time for reflection, self-discipline, and spiritual growth—an annual training programme for the mind, body, and soul. As founder Sab describes it: The holy month encourages greater empathy towards those less fortunate, gratitude for one’s blessings, and an opportunity to work on personal conduct, language, and compassion. The physical challenge of fasting from dawn to sunset also strengthens resilience and discipline.

Ramadan 2025 Events

To celebrate Ramadan in 2025, Salaam Peace will be hosting its Fasting Challenge on the 7th of March. Participants will have the choice of three fasting options:

  1. Full Fast – No food or drink from sunrise to sunset.
  1. Modified Fast – Breakfast followed by no food or drink until sunset.
  1. Partial Fast – Breakfast followed by water only until sunset.

This initiative allows individuals to experience fasting in a way that suits them while promoting unity, understanding, and reflection. Additionally, Salaam Peace will be attending other community events throughout the month, further reinforcing their commitment to fostering inclusivity and shared experiences.

“The Ramadan Challenge that Salaam Peace organises each year is an important moment.   Having taken part on several occasions – and again this year – I know it not only makes the level of commitment and self-discipline required to observe Ramadan come to life – it also celebrates the contribution of so many to serving our communities and bringing sport and physical activity opportunities to life.  My best wishes to everyone at Salaam Peace for the challenge this year.” -Tim Hollingsworth OBE, Chief Executive Sport England
