Kaleem’s LeaderBoard Experience

Meet Kaleem, Sporting Equals Ambassador and LeaderBoard Scotland Alumni. This blog explores why Kaleem took part in the LeaderBoard programme and his experience.

What inspired you to take part in LeaderBoard?

When Sporting Equals reached out, I was intrigued straight away. I was injured at the time and stuck in that weird place of figuring out where my passions really lie. It felt like the right moment to grow outside my comfort zone, learn more, and admit to myself that I definitely don’t know it all (even though athletes sometimes like to think we do).

What was your highlight of the programme?

Hands down — the people. By day three, the relationships I’d built felt like proper team camaraderie, which is something I’ve always had in sport, but this was different. Different experiences, different backgrounds, but the same goals. It felt unique, and honestly, refreshing.

How have you seen benefits since taking part?

I’m not going to pretend I’m board-ready just yet, but the benefits have been huge. The biggest one? The connections. Knowledge is great, but genuine relationships with good people who want to make a difference — that’s the real game-changer. From fellow candidates to the SGBs who gave up their time, those links matter.

What would be your ideal boardroom position and why?

I love the idea of being part of a team driving real change, but what really excites me is bringing raw honesty into a room. Sometimes people haven’t lived these realities, or they’ve been blissfully unaware of the challenges others face. To be able to shine a light on that — while also showing the incredible opportunities sport has to reach deeper into communities — that’s where I’d want to sit.

Why did you want to become a Sporting Equals Ambassador?

To properly step outside my comfort zone. Funny thing is, from the outside it might look like I already do that — but actually making that step is different. I wanted to learn what it really takes to make a difference, not just talk the talk.
