Girls Powered

Sporting Equals partnered with the Sweaty Betty Foundation in 2021 to launch the Girls Powered project that aims at getting the least active 13-18-year-old girls in and around Manchester active. In 2024 we enter Year 3 of the partnership.

Sporting Equals X Sweaty Betty

Sporting Equals partnered with the Sweaty Betty Foundation in 2021 to launch the Girls Powered project that aims at getting the least active 13-18-year-old girls in and around Manchester active.

They get to participate in and co-design, fun, inclusive, and ongoing physical activities based at a local partner community organisation. The partner organisations were provided with capacity-building support.
This project has demonstrated an approach that has empowered young girls to codesign ‘offers’ to meet their needs and overcome the race and faith barriers that exist.

Phase 1 of the project ran from November 2021 to May 2022.
Phase 2 ran from June 2022 to December 2022.
Phase 3 will run across 2 years – from January 2023 to December 2024.

“I have loved these sessions because it has allowed me to have something fun and interesting to do with my weekend. I feel like I have become a better runner through these sessions. I would love for these sessions to continue as I would love to become a faster runner as well as make new friends.”

The project has seen two of the organisations involved either win or be nominated for awards:
