It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Fauja Singh, aged 114 . A former Ambassador of Sporting Equals and a true icon of the global running community.
Fauja began running at the age of 89 as a way to overcome personal grief, and from there, he went on to achieve extraordinary milestones. He famously completed the London Marathon at the age of 100 and broke multiple records in the years that followed. As one of Sporting Equals Ambassadors Fauja has been an inspiration for many people from all backgrounds, advocating ‘that age and background is no barrier’ and for people of all ages to be active and a role model to inspire other to take part in sports like running.
In 2009, Fauja and four friends, aged between 79 and 88, formed the “Golden Oldies” team and ran the Edinburgh Marathon Relay. This group later evolved into Sikhs in the City, a well-established running club based in East London embodied by Fuaja’s humanity and openness. Even after retiring at 112, he continued to inspire generations to get active regardless of age, ability, or background. Sikhs in the City is an important Sporting Equals Associate member supporting people from all backgrounds to take part in marathons and events around the world, running with interfaith teams and inspiring others to take part in running.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable man. Fauja Singh’s legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.
