Eniola’s LeaderBoard Journey

My inspiration for joining the LeaderBoard programme came from my passion for both sport and finance. While at university, I completed an internship with Aberdeen FC, where I worked alongside senior management and got a glimpse into how decisions are made within a professional sports organisation. That experience really sparked my curiosity about how governance works at the board level and encouraged me to apply for LeaderBoard as a way to build on that interest and learn from others who share the same passion for using sport to drive positive change.

The highlight of the programme for me was the opportunity to learn, listen, and network with professionals and representatives from various Sport Governing Bodies (SGBs). I particularly enjoyed the session with Forbes Dunlop, CEO of Sportscotland, who provided a detailed overview of the organisation’s structure, its connection to the Scottish Government, and the flow of funding through the sporting system. It was insightful to see how policy, finance, and governance intersect in practice.

One of the main benefits was gaining a stronger understanding of how governance operates within the sports industry, particularly how SGBs are approaching diversity and inclusion at the board level. A standout session for me was with Debbie Shields from Aspen People Ltd, where we learned how to tailor our CVs for board roles. This session was pivotal in helping me secure my current role as a subcommittee member on the EDI & Engagement Committee for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

I chose to apply because the Commonwealth Games’ vision to promote inclusion, unity, and excellence through sport resonated with me. The Sporting Equals team made me aware of this opportunity, and having just completed the LeaderBoard programme, I felt ready and equipped with the knowledge and confidence to apply and approach the interview process. Growing up, sports gave me the chance to work closely with people from different backgrounds and experience the power of teamwork firsthand. This role feels like a natural next step, giving me the chance to see that same spirit of unity and collaboration come to life on an even bigger, international stage.

I’m looking forward to contributing to the committee’s work in making Glasgow 2026 the most inclusive Games yet. Our aim is to engage with diverse communities across the country and ensure the Games reach new audiences, no matter how they choose to get involved. We also want to create an approach to equality, diversity, inclusion, and engagement that future Games and major events can build on. I’m excited to play a part in shaping that legacy, making a real difference, and learning from the talented people I’ll be working alongside.
