Sporting Equals Statement on the Passing of Uriah Rennie

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Uriah Rennie on 8 June 2025, at the age of 65. As the first Black referee in the Premier League, Uriah was a trailblazer—challenging the status quo and paving the way for greater ethnic representation in one of the most visible arenas of British sport.

From his debut in 1997, Uriah officiated over 300 top-flight matches with authority, professionalism, and integrity. His influence, however, extended well beyond the pitch. As a magistrate, community leader, and Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, he embodied the values of fairness, inclusion, and public service.

At Sporting Equals, we champion systemic change that enables all individuals—regardless of background—to thrive in sport and physical activity. Uriah Rennie’s life and career are powerful reminders of what is possible when barriers are broken and talent is recognised on merit. He did not just open doors—he kept them open for others to walk through.

His passing is a profound loss to the sporting community and to all those who strive for greater race equity in leadership, governance, and officiating. Uriah’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to lead, serve, and make change where it matters most.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched.
