From “Why Not Me?” to the Boardroom: How LeaderBoard Helped Danny Williams Take the Next Step

Leadership journeys are rarely linear. For Danny Williams, a respected safeguarding professional who has worked across education, boxing, athletics and now rowing, the path to senior leadership was shaped by experience, ambition, and a desire to see greater diversity at the highest levels of sport.

After joining Sporting Equals’ LeaderBoard programme in 2025, Danny has since been appointed Director of Culture and Integrity at British Rowing and secured an Elected Board Member position with Basketball England. We caught up with Danny to learn more about his LeaderBoard experience and how the programme helped him build the confidence and skills to pursue board-level leadership.

Finding a Space to Grow

Despite holding senior leadership positions throughout his career, Danny felt there was still something missing.

“I have often found myself in rooms where I was the only person who looked like me, or one of very few. Over time, that can quietly affect your confidence, your sense of belonging, and even how far you believe you can go.”

When he discovered LeaderBoard, Danny saw an opportunity to connect with others who shared similar ambitions and lived experiences.

While balancing the programme alongside existing professional commitments was a consideration, he recognised that meaningful development often requires stepping outside your comfort zone.

“If I wanted to progress, I needed to be prepared to learn from others, invest in my development and challenge myself.”

The Power of Representation

One of the most impactful aspects of LeaderBoard for Danny was the environment it created.

“It felt safe, ambitious and forward-thinking at the same time.”

Seeing a room full of talented people from diverse backgrounds aspiring to and achieving leadership positions in sport had a profound effect.

LeaderBoard offered far more than networking opportunities. It created a space where participants could openly discuss their ambitions, share challenges, and learn from one another without feeling the need to explain or justify their experiences.

“There was something powerful about feeling seen and openly discussing ambition without hesitation.”

For Danny, each session left him feeling more reflective, focused and intentional about his leadership journey.

Developing a Board-Level Mindset

A key takeaway from the programme was gaining a deeper understanding of governance and board leadership.

LeaderBoard helped Danny distinguish between being an effective operational leader and thinking strategically as a board member. Through the programme, he developed a greater appreciation for organisational sustainability, risk management, culture, stakeholder relationships and long-term decision-making.

Importantly, it also strengthened his confidence in the value of his own experience and perspective.

“LeaderBoard didn’t simply give me knowledge; it helped me see myself as someone who could credibly operate in that environment.”

The programme challenged him to recognise that effective board members do not need to have all the answers. Instead, they bring curiosity, constructive challenge, sound judgement and a commitment to acting in the best interests of the organisation.

This shift in thinking proved invaluable as Danny pursued and secured his board position with Basketball England.

“LeaderBoard helped me move from quietly thinking ‘maybe one day’ to more actively considering ‘why not now?'”

Embracing Challenge and Vulnerability

Like many experienced leaders, Danny found one of the biggest challenges was allowing himself to be vulnerable.

When you’re accustomed to leading teams and making decisions, stepping back and acknowledging areas for development can be uncomfortable.

However, LeaderBoard’s diverse cohort encouraged participants to embrace different perspectives and challenge their own thinking.

Rather than defending existing views, Danny chose to listen, ask questions and reflect deeply on the feedback and experiences shared by others.

This openness to learning became one of the most valuable lessons he took away from the programme and continues to shape his leadership approach today.

A Message for Future Leaders

Reflecting on his experience, Danny believes the greatest growth comes not simply from gaining new knowledge but from being willing to question your assumptions, learn from others and adapt your approach.

“LeaderBoard has inspired me, challenged me and reminded me that there is space for us in senior leadership across the sports industry, not as an exception, but as the future.”

His journey demonstrates the transformative impact that targeted leadership development can have, particularly when it combines practical governance learning, peer support, role models and representation.

As Danny’s recent appointments show, investing in your development today can open doors you may not have considered possible tomorrow.
